Clear, credible writing for universities and the institutions that shape them.

Fish, Ink is the practice of Patrick Fish — a writer, editor and researcher who has spent years helping universities and the higher-education sector turn complex ideas, events and institutional processes into documents people actually read. Annual reports, strategy, speeches, articles and learning materials. Johannesburg-born, working worldwide.

What I do

Good writing helps organisations think better.

My work sits where careful research, clear writing and sector understanding meet — helping universities, higher-education bodies and mission-driven organisations turn complex ideas, events and institutional processes into documents that are readable, useful and strategically focused.

It isn't only about producing documents. Good writing gives shape to complexity, preserves institutional memory, supports decision-making, and makes ideas available to wider audiences — it helps people and institutions say what they mean.

Hand over the whole publication — I'll run it to print

Annual report, conference report, organisational profile or media article — you can outsource the entire process. I coordinate, write and oversee the whole thing from concept to completion, brief the design partner, and manage budget, timeframes and print quality. You approve; I run it.

Proven across universities and the higher-education sector — Universities South Africa, Wits, Nelson Mandela University and more — and in health and youth education.

Reports & publications

Need an annual report, a conference report, an organisational profile or a strategy document? Outsource the whole thing. Writing & editing

Words are the work. Opinion pieces and media articles, speeches, briefing notes, concept papers and programme materials — written and edited to be thoughtful without being inflated, persuasive without being pompous, and analytical without becoming unreadable.

Explore

Research & sense-making

The quieter, harder task: making sense of discussions, interviews, workshops and institutional processes, and turning them into coherent reports that capture both the detail and the larger story. I'm comfortable working from recordings, notes, strategy sessions and incomplete drafts.

Communications & advocacy

Higher-education communication and advocacy: working out what an institution needs to say, to whom and why — then giving it shape across programme documentation, messaging and public-facing communication that makes a policy issue or institutional process accessible.

Curriculum & learning design

Learning materials that are accurate, humane, accessible and usable in the real world. Built on long experience in HIV-prevention and sexual & reproductive health education — from curricula and facilitator manuals to online learning that trained hundreds of youth facilitators across South Africa.

01

Understand

I start by working out what you actually need — the outcome, the audience, and the larger story under the detail.

02

Research & write

Working from recordings, interviews, notes and strategy sessions, I research, write and edit until it's clear and credible.

03

Deliver

I stay on it to completion — and where a job needs design, layout or a website, I bring in trusted partners.

What clients say

Work that earns its keep

I began collaborating with Patrick Fish in 1996 while working at the Mail & Guardian, producing a monthly supplement on higher education in South Africa, and consistently relied on his valuable input. His writing, intelligence and clarity of thought made him an indispensable member of the team — and as Africa editor of University World News I've commissioned him a number of times since.

Since 2021 we've developed a genuinely collaborative and intellectually rich working relationship, particularly around research, writing and the development of articles on higher education and public issues. I've come to value Patrick enormously as a professional partner — not only for the quality of his work but for the seriousness, thoughtfulness and integrity he brings to our shared projects.

Over the past decade Patrick has made a significant contribution to the way HETTAS conceptualises, presents and advances its work in health education and youth-prevention programming. His work combines strong project execution with an unusual ability to translate complex programme goals into accessible, compelling and strategically aligned content.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Yes — most of my work is remote and I collaborate with clients worldwide. I'm Johannesburg-born, working across time zones, so being in another country changes nothing about how we work together.

Institutional and higher-education writing above all: annual and conference reports, strategy documents, opinion pieces, speeches, briefing notes, concept papers and programme materials. I also develop curricula and learning materials for health and youth-education programmes.

The packages on the pricing page are starting points. Final cost depends on scope, so I quote each project individually after a short conversation. You'll get a clear, itemised proposal before any work begins — no surprises.

Each project includes up to two rounds of review and revision. Extended, multi-stage review cycles are the single biggest driver of cost and delay, so keeping it to two keeps your quote predictable — anything beyond that is simply quoted separately.

Yes. My craft is the words, research and structure, but I manage whole publications end to end — briefing trusted design partners, overseeing layout, and managing budget, timeframes and print quality. You deal with one person throughout.

Absolutely. Some clients need a single report, an article or a speech; others hand me a whole publication or programme. The Starter package exists for one focused piece of work.

South African clients are invoiced in Rand; international clients in USD. Prices on the site switch automatically to your local currency. I accept bank transfer — project work is typically split into a deposit and a balance on delivery, and retainers are billed monthly. I'll confirm the details in your proposal.
